The cold wind from Russia

"Putin's election-eve attack against Washington and its western allies for exporting “rocket-bomb democracy” indirectly targets India too."

The Hindu : Opinion / Lead : The cold wind from Russia: PM Vladimir Putin, almost certain to win the Russian presidential elections, has laid out a tough foreign policy vision for his third term in the Kremlin that may entail changes in Russia's relations with its main partners East and West.

Moscow feels its cooperation with the West on Libya was wilfully abused when Nato countries, in Mr. Putin's words, "did away with the Libyan regime by using air power under the pretext of humanitarian support."

Russia's intransigence on Syria steps from a clear understanding that the U.S. and the Saudi-led group of Arab countries are out to pull down the Assad regime in order to weaken Iran, change its political regime, and remodel the entire region. The standoff on Syria may also trigger shifts in Russia's relations with its two main strategic partners, India and China.

An Iranian oil embargo and a Russian oil boon

"Russian government has opposed the idea of Western petroleum sanctions against Iran. But new threats to Iranian oil flow could have at least one beneficiary: Russia. Its pipelines stand ready to serve customers willing to pay a premium price — with a grade of oil closely resembling Iran's."

The Hindu : Opinion / Op-Ed : An Iranian oil embargo and a Russian oil boon: Russia is now the world's largest oil producer. Though rising prices are a boon for every oil producer, Russia has a particular advantage: a pipeline system that can supply Iran's traditional customers in both Europe and Asia. Depending on which way the geopolitical winds are blowing, Russia has the ability to direct more or less of its oil either eastward or westward.

American politicians are divided in their willingness to disrupt global petroleum trading and financing to the potential detriment of strategic allies. At least one exemption in the bank strictures under discussion is meant specifically to limit the strategic benefits for Russia

There are other limits to Russia's ability to fully capitalize on the Iranian oil upheaval. The big one is that the Russian industry is already producing petroleum from its working fields at full capacity. But its extensive pipeline network gives Russia enviable flexibility to direct its oil to wherever demand — and prices — are highest.

The Russians are leaving … Russia

"Highly qualified middle-class professionals, feeling ignored by the country's economy and political system, are emigrating in search of greener pastures."

The Hindu : Opinion / Lead : The Russians are leaving … Russia: Russians consider emigration as their chance for self-attainment and a better life. Who could have imagined two decades ago that Russians would be leaving their country in search of social justice and security?

In absolute terms, emigration from Russia is not that big when compared with many other countries. Moreover, it is offset by the influx of immigrants from other former Soviet States. The problem is that the country has been haemorrhaging highly qualified and entrepreneurial cadres, the cream of society, whereas the bulk of newcomers are unskilled labourers from Central Asia.

Cynics say the Kremlin is only too happy to see the disgruntled leave the country and this is one reason why it has been pushing for a visa-free travel arrangement with Europe. The country that lives off its oil and minerals does not need that many qualified specialists anyway.

Putin to meet 'old friend' Henry Kissinger

PM Vladimir Putin will meet with former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger to discuss world affairs, including elections in Russia and the United States.

"The meeting comes six weeks before Russia's presidential election and amid accusations that the United States was behind a series of street protests that began after the Dec. 4 parliamentary elections that were widely dismissed as fraudulent." The Hindu : Opinion / Op-Ed : Putin to meet 'old friend' Henry Kissinger

Mr. Putin has cited Kissinger as a trusted foreign policy adviser.
